I am Teruya, a craftsman of Schiessers.
I am “Jyoui Teruya,” an owner of the Schiesser-making studio. So far I have made more than 30,000 Schiessers. Painted Schiessers are made of natural Ryuku mortar as the main material.
Ryukyu mortar is made of coral (slaked lime) and straw.
It is this type of Schiessers by use of this mortar that became a forerunner of the spread to ordinary homes in Okinawa.
It is a feature that Schiesser-making is difficult compared with chinaware. It is for that reason that the shapes of many Schiessers of mortar are not clear-cut.
Schiessers have a difference by a studio.
The way of making and the used materials make a difference, and the individuality of each studio comes out. Individuality is taste, and if the taste suits your liking, it will be wonderful. It is interesting for features of Schiesser-making places to come out also in Schiesser-making experience. We sell handmade Schiessers.
